A black-and-white photo shows a young woman gently placing a flower wreath on a donkey’s head. The animal stands calmly, and the scene has a quiet, melancholic atmosphere.

Au Hasard Balthazar

Au Hasard Balthazar (1966, dir. Robert Bresson) – a project co-organized with the French Institute.

French drama is considered one of the masterpieces of spiritual cinema. It tells the story of the donkey Balthazar, whose life intertwines with that of Marie. The film is an allegory of suffering, innocence, and the world’s indifference to pain. Bresson, a master of ascetic style, presents the animal as a sacred being, and its fate as a parable of martyrdom and grace.
