The film tells the story of five people. Ania (Martyna Byczkowska) looks after a luxury villa, The Raven, in the Masurian Lake District, where two couples come to stay: Leon (Michał Żurawski) with Eleni (Joanna Opozda), and Bruno (Piotr Stramowski) with Magda (Katarzyna Sawczuk). Bruno recognizes Ania—her sister used to date Leon and was killed in a bomb explosion, while Ania’s testimony led to Leon’s conviction. Leon seems to ignore the past, focusing instead on his vacation. Ania tries to ease the awkward situation by suggesting a drink together, but she has no idea what consequences await her the following day…
The director chose restraint and minimalism, setting the action in a single house, focusing on dialogues, the tension between the five characters, and a precisely constructed narrative.
The style and concept of The Enemy draw on the tradition of the thriller genre, with many moments clearly nodding to the master of suspense—Hitchcock. Whether and to what extent this artistic choice succeeds is something audiences will be able to judge this October.
